BUFFALO, N.Y. - Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is ready to compete for a starting job, after the first-round draft pick signed a four-year contract worth about $12 million on Thursday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore is ready to compete for a starting job, after the first-round draft pick signed a four-year contract worth about $12 million on Thursday.

The deal was announced by the team, and included Buffalo CEO Russ Brandon posting a photo on his Twitter account of Gilmore signing his contract.

“It’s official,” Brandon wrote. “Nice way to start the morning.”

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Gilmore was drafted 10th overall after a three-year career at South Carolina, where he started all 40 games and was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection. The contract includes an option for fifth year.

The Bills have already opened room for Gilmore to take over after they released veteran starter Drayton Florence last week. And the signing came days after Gilmore got his first taste of the NFL in taking part in the Bills three-day rookie minicamp last weekend.

In four practices, Gilmore had several pass break ups and at least one interception while showing off his coverage skills. He was both fast on his feet in covering receivers deep, and also showed he’s capable of bumping opponents coming off the line of scrimmage.

After the minicamp, Gilmore expected to have the contract completed by the end of this week, and is now happy to get it out of the way.

“I wasn’t going to let it be a distraction. I wasn’t really worried about it,” Gilmore said in a statement released by the team. “I knew it was going to come through. Now I can just focus on football and do what I want to do.”

Gilmore was the second cornerback selected in the draft, behind LSU’s Morris Claiborne, who was picked sixth by Dallas.

The next step for Gilmore comes on May 29, when he will get an opportunity to line up against veteran receivers once the Bills open a monthlong series of minicamps.

“Oh yeah, I’m ready to see what the vets have going on,” Gilmore said last weekend. “I’m going to play with confidence, and I’m going to still do what I know, and go from there.”

Gilmore made a good first impression on coach Chan Gailey, who noted both the player’s athleticism and confident approach.

Gilmore becomes the seventh of Buffalo’s nine draft picks to sign with the team. The only players left unsigned are Buffalo’s second- and third-round picks, offensive tackle Cordy Glenn and receiver T.J. Graham.

Gilmore is the latest addition to a defence that’s been rebuilt this off-season, and to be overseen by Dave Wannstedt, who takes over as co-ordinator after George Edwards was fired in January. The Bills have already addressed improving their pass rush in free agency, when they signed defensive ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson in March.

The moves were made in a bid to improve a defence that allowed a franchise-worst 5,938 yards last season. Buffalo is coming off a 6-10 finish to miss the playoffs for a 12th straight year.

Alex Tanney wants to be an NFL quarterback and there are no tricks up his sleeve to make that happen.

Tanney, a YouTube sensation for being the “Trick Shot Quarterback,” is taking his NFL tryout with the Buffalo Bills very seriously and knows it will take more than being able to throw footballs into moving vehicles or hitting a crossbar from 50 yards out from his knee to make the roster.

“I’m here to play football and not throw trick shots,” said Tanney, one of 21 players trying out for the Bills this weekend during the team’s rookie mini-camp.

Tanney holds the NCAA record with 157 touchdowns passes in five seasons at Monmouth College and completed nearly 69 percent of his passes with only 30 interceptions. However, Tanney is known most for his YouTube video in which he throws footballs through basketball hoops from across the court and once through a hallway from the floor of a gymnasium and into a trash can sitting on a track — without looking at the can.

“Everybody gives me grief about the video, but I just accept it,” said Tanney. “I posted the video and it went viral and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Tanney’s video has more than 1.1 million hits in the 16 months it has been online and turned him into a national celebrity. In fact, Tanney even appeared in an episode of “Stan Lee’s Superhumans” on the History Channel to show off his incredible accuracy.

Still, Tanney is thinking only about football and how he can make a career as an NFL quarterback.

“I’m trying to pick up as much as I can and learn the offense as best as I can,” said Tanney. “There are other guys who have had success lately from smaller schools. Teams are starting to look at the lower-level guys now and all I’ve ever wanted is an opportunity to come to camp and compete.”

Tanney, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Normal, also holds the Division III record with 14,249 career passing yards.

While he’s not yet known for what he did on the football field, Tanney is hoping that changes someday very soon.

“We didn’t expect it to blow up the way it did,” Tanney said. “It was just me and my buddies fooling around after working out.

“I grew up around the game and I’ve played quarterback since I was a kid. I just started doing it, spur of the moment, and it took off.”

Tanney actually agreed to attend rookie camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers at first, but when the Bills came calling he changed his mind. Tanney said the Bills were one of the first teams to contact him before the draft with interest and is even familiar with Buffalo’s quarterback coach, David Lee.

Tanney actually had a chance to show off his incredible accuracy live for the team and the media during Friday’s opening day of camp. Running a normal throwing drill, Tanney had two big nets 20 yards down the field with little pouches cut out.

Tanney dropped balls right into the pouch dead center over and over, showing his video is no trick.

Now, he hopes his chance to play at the highest level is all genuine.

There is the quick update of the day.

A linebacker from Alfred University or Canisteo-Greenwood won’t jump off the page, but Nick Clark his work this weekend will stand out enough that his NFL dream can continue.

Clark began his three-day NFL tryout with the Buffalo Bills on Friday — the opening day of the team’s rookie mini-camp at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“Just being in the facility and being able to go out on the practice field with all the other guys has been great,” said Clark following his first practice with the Bills’ rookies on Friday afternoon.

Clark, who was a two-time Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year and a part of the Saxons’ team that reached the NCAA Division III tournament in 2010, went undrafted and hoped to hook on somewhere as a free agent.

“I had what I thought was a free agency offer, but that ended up not panning out,” said Clark, who ended up with an invitation to attend the Bills’ rookie camp and has had these three days to try and impress an NFL franchise. “Then I had this chance to try out for the Bills and you couldn’t ask for a better organization.”

During his first practice with the Bills, Clark ran individual drills with the linebackers and participated in 7-on-7’s. Defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt could clearly be heard yelling, “Nice job, Clark!” several times during the practice.

Not a bad start for Clark to be complimented by a Super Bowl champion coach.

“It really is surreal,” said Clark about being instructed by the likes of Wannstedt and head coach Chan Gailey. “You go into the team meeting on the very first day and there’s coach Gailey and coach Wannstedt and all the other coaches. It’s really been a dream so far.”

It’s only three days, so it’s tough to make an impression, but Gailey made it clear about what exactly he and his coaching staff would be looking for from the rookies.

“You try to see effort the guys give and you try to see if he’s a lazy guy or if he’s a worker,” said Gailey. “They’re all talented guys. They wouldn’t be here if they weren’t talented. We’re looking for how they work and how they retain things.”

Clark is certainly looking to take full advantage of this opportunity and the first step would be making it through this weekend and getting an invitation to training camp this summer in Rochester with the Bills.

The NFL became a possibility after his breakout junior year in which he won his first Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year award.

“I got called into coach (Dave) Murray’s office and he told me the Arizona Cardinals had called and asked for some game film,” recalled Clark.

Then he backed it up with another stellar season, even adding short yardage back to his resume, and the chance of being draft became real. While he was passed up in the draft, Clark is among 21 players just hoping for a chance.

“You see the guys from TCU and Florida State and Penn State, you know, all those big schools and then they ask where you’re from and you say Alfred,” said Clark. “Everybody kind of looks at you funny.”

Yet, he’s not the only one from a nearby small town. Derek Buttles, a tight end out of Maine, played high school football at Letchworth and Byron Mulkey, a cornerback from the University at Buffalo, is originally from Wheatfield.

“Just having the chance to be here has been unreal,” said Clark.

In addition to starring on the gridiron, Clark won a pair of state wrestling title at Canisteo-Greenwood. However, the idea of possibly playing in the NFL didn’t cross his mind back in his high school days.

“I would have worked out a little harder in the off-season from high school to now,” said Clark. “I wouldn’t have wrestled, that’s for sure.”

Clark, used to being a fighter, did that this weekend and maybe his NFL dream isn’t over yet.

Longtime NFL executive Bill Polian will be inducted into the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame, the team said Sunday.

Polian served as the team’s general manager from 1986 to 1993, turning a losing franchise into a perennial Super Bowl contender, winning NFL Executive of the Year award twice in that time.

“Bill was the architect of our Super Bowl teams which made four consecutive appearances, a feat that may never be duplicated,” Bills owner Ralph Wilson said in a statement.

The Bills fired Polian after the team lost its third consecutive Super Bowl. The team, largely intact from the year before, made it back to the Super Bowl the following year, as well.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am,” said Polian said in a statement. “I told Mr. Wilson I really couldn’t find words adequate to express my gratitude and happiness.”

Polian was instrumental in signing Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly and drafting Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith. He also drafted running back Thurman Thomas and wide receiver Andre Reed.

Polian went on to serve as the general manager of the expansion Carolina Panthers (1994 to 1997) and president and general manager of the Indianapolis Colts (1997 to 2011). While in Indianapolis he drafted Peyton Manning and finally won a Super Bowl in 2006.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) – Mack McDowell likes to spend time at the local knife and gun show “drooling over firearms,” as he puts it. Retired after 30 years in the U.S. Army, he has lined his study with books on war, framed battalion patches from his tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, a John Wayne poster, and an 1861 Springfield rifle from an ancestor who fought in the Civil War. But when it comes to the 2012 presidential election, Master Sergeant McDowell is no hawk. …

Tanney, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Normal, Ill., also holds the Division III record with 14,249 career passing yards.
